March 2015 Updates on Previous Posts

I have been spending some time going through my blog archives. When I started this blog in 2009, I more or less intended just to mention certain interesting New Jersey stories I read about either online or elsewhere.

Yurts at Allaire State Park

Yurts at Allaire State Park

Traditional yurts used by nomads in Asia are usually made with felt or wool. Yurts have been adapted for camping in the United States.

Only four campgrounds in New Jersey have yurts. Allaire State Park is one of them.

These structures are made of high-tech materials. It is a circular tent built on a wood frame, featuring wood floors, a deck and Plexiglas skylight. Each yurt has a lockable wood door, window screens and flaps, and two double-deck bunks, which sleep up to four people. Cooking facilities, water and restroom facilities are usually within walking distance. This makes it a more practical alternative to a regular tent, which must be set up and taken down each day, not to mention that it is far more comfortable to sleep on a real bed, and to move around more freely.

I wrote about this beautiful park and its historic village with its unusual chapel and Pine Creek Railroad last year.

The park also includes camping facilities, including yurts.

Bahrs Landing Is Still Standing!

Bahrs Landing is a legendary place in Highlands, New Jersey.

It is 97 years old this year, and it amazing because it sustained considerable damage in October 2012 from Hurricane “Superstorm” Sandy, which destroyed many other businesses (including many restaurants) in the area.

Diners of New Jersey - Jersey Shore Edition

Diner

New Jersey is considered the diner capital of the world.

There are hundreds of diners in the state, and they are an integral part of the New Jersey dining experience.

Many are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The diner in the top photo is the Marvis Diner in Wildwood, New Jersey.

This week I am posting photos of diners I have visited located near or at the Jersey shore.

Next is the Princess Maria Diner in Wall Township:

In  the Wildwoods, many of the buildings are in the Doo-Wop Style, or Googie Architecture,

The top photo of the Marvis Diner is an example of that.

There is also the Doo Wop Diner on the Wildwood boardwalk:

Sea Girt Lighthouse | Sea Girt, New Jersey

Sea Girt Lighthouse

Sea Girt Lighthouse in pretty little Sea Girt, New Jersey is a sweet little lighthouse. It is different, because the little light tower is actually part of the house. Most lighthouses are separate structures from the keeper’s house.

After you enter the house, you see the little parlor.

To get to the light, you must climb a small ladder:

You can see the light:

The views from the lighthouse are great.

The Historic Village at Allaire

The Historic Village at Allaire

In last week's post, I showed you the pretty little chapel at The Historic Village at Allaire, the historic town in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Workers at the Howell Iron Works lived in this self-contained little village.

Allaire Village is a peaceful and beautiful little place, and a wonderful day trip for the whole family.

On the weekends there are docents in period costume to tell you all about the village, and you can take a trip on the Pine Creek Railroad!
