The Kirkbride Building, Greystone Park (March 2015)

Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital was originally built in 1876 as the New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum at Morristown. Obviously there was no “political correctness” at the time.

Music Mondays: Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Back in the 1980s, there was a fresh new face on the music scene! Cyndi Lauper debuted her solo career with this instant classic!

It was so fun, fresh, and now that the day after I first saw that video I danced down to the record store in the mall and bought the album! Yes, a vinyl record!

Music Mondays: School's Out for Summer!

Sunday, July 13, 2014 / 20 comments

I still remember the last day of sixth grade. We struggled through the half-day, getting our report cards, and waiting with anxiety for the summer to start! Finally, our teacher smilingly said “You can go now!” and a bunch of boys went screaming out of the classroom, while the teachers laughed.

Music Mondays: Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush

Sunday, July 6, 2014 / 16 comments

The first time I remember seeing and hearing the English singer-songwriter Kate Bush was on Saturday Night Live in 1978. She was a bit older than me but still a teenager and she sang very well and I thought she was talented in a quirky way.

Music Mondays: Swedish House Mafia (Save the World)

Being of half-Swedish ancestry I couldn't help but be intrigued by a group called Swedish House Mafia. : )

This is such a striking video. The song is catchy but the story and visuals are what really make the video interesting. I love the heroes that save the day!

Adam Lambert and The Black Eyed Peas

Adam Lambert's so cute. Yes, I know he doesn't play on my team, but he's still cute. And what a voice! The song was co-written by Pink, who I wrote about here.

Phoebe Snow 1950-2011

Saturday, May 7, 2011 / 6 comments

Sadly, the great singer Phoebe Snow died recently. Phoebe grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey and graduated from Teaneck High School. Phoebe was a marvelous singer with a very distinctive voice and great range. She had a big hit with "Poetry Man" in 1975:

But that year also saw the birth of her daughter, who was born with severe brain damage. Phoebe elected to stay home with her daughter, thus slowing the progress of her career. She did, however, sing on commercials, and sometimes make public appearances and sing with her friends.

There is a charming story by a friend of Phoebe's on The Huffington Post. You can read it here.

You will really be missed, Phoebe . . .
