Ocean Grove Camp Meetings!

photo OceanGrove1_zps6tjkjtk2.jpg

Lovely Ocean Grove, New Jersey, down the shore, was founded in 1869 as a Methodist Camp Meeting town. Even though Ocean Grove was eventually required to become part of Neptune, New Jersey, it still has a very strong religious spirit.

Every spring, tents are attached to standing wooden sheds which contain the kitchen and bathroom. The devout Methodists come to Ocean Grove each summer and are part of the camp revival meetings, which are still held one week a year. These tents are then taken down in the fall and stored in the sheds until the next year.

The most famous structure in Ocean Grove is the Great Auditorium, where the camp revival meetings are held and concerts are held throughout the year. The auditorium seats about 6,000 people and is one of the largest auditoriums in New Jersey. It also contains one of the largest pipe organs in the world.

  15. Thanks for sharing the Methodist camp pictures and information with us - very interesting. Love how the tents were decorated with flower boxes and 4th of July decor. I love how people up your way say "down the shore" while here in Virginia we say "to the beach." Dialects are so much fun :)

I'm your newest "follower" from the blog hop and would love a follow back - thanks!

  16. Yes, "down the shore" is a Jersey thing. I'll be over to your blog very soon!

  19. I've read about Ocean Grove before - it's such an amazing place.  Thoroughly enjoyed your pictures.

  20. It really is an amazing place. So pretty and full of history.

  21. History tells us that trainloads of hungry Christians crossed the states to the Ocean Grove camp meeting in search of the reality of heart purity. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God."

  22. It's a very peaceful and beautiful place. A nice place to find answers.

  23. I don't know how I missed this blog when you wrote it, sorry because I have a cottage in Ocean Grove and would have loved to meet you "down at the shore".  Ocean Grove is "magical" that's how I always describe it to people.  God's Square Mile they call it.

  24. It's a special place. You're so lucky to have a cottage there!
