Haunted Hospitals Redux

Photobucket

Overbrook Hospital, also known as the old Essex County Hospital Center, was a mental hospital in Cedar Grove, New Jersey that was notorious in its day. Horror stories about what went on at the hospital abound.

The buildings were basically abandoned in the 1990’s, and a new Essex County Hospital Center was built in Cedar Grove nearby.

There have been continual fights between the county and developers on what to do with the land.

I first photographed some of the buildings three years ago (I was a very bad photographer with a very bad camera), and some of the buildings have since been torn down. Demolition of the buildings has since stopped, and the remaining buildings have a properly haunted look.

I took these new photos in October 2012, partly because my old photos were so bad and because I know that eventually all of the buildings will be gone.

The buildings look like they were quite beautiful and the grounds are lovely:

  2. What a shame and waste to destroy that building. Lovely grounds. We have a big home here they are wanting to destroy, but so much history will be lost.

    1. Yes, you can drive by -- just don't walk on the grounds.

  5. I'm not surprised that were horror stories of what went on inside. But it's so sad that those great buildings can't be saved.
