Happy Thanksgiving!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Enjoy the holiday with family and friends. Take time to rest and relax and have a good time. Even though times are tough economically, just realize how lucky you are to have friends and family. Let's appreciate our family members, and don't take them for granted, because we have no way of knowing what the future will hold.

I used to take people for granted, and during the past three years, my life was turned upside-down and everything changed. I've had to learn to adjust, but it has been very difficult. I never really thought about the future, or really learned to appreciate the present. It's a life-changing and on-going process.

I've grown to really love blogging in the last few months. To those of you who are reading this -- THANK YOU.

Brookside Park in Bloomfield

Sunday, November 22, 2009
Brookside Park in Bloomfield is a little oasis in the middle of a busy town. I love to come here and watch the ducks. They love to argue with each other. The Canadian geese are their usual snooty selves. They love to march across the road, not caring about the traffic at all.

It is NOT a good idea to feed the wildlife, however, since apparently there is a possible $1000 fine if you do.

I love the sign at the entrance: "Enjoy your stay . . . please leave nothing behind but your footprints."

Tammy the Turnpike Turkey Captured!

Friday, November 20, 2009

Tammy the New Jersey Turnpike Turkey has been captured. Apparently she has become such a tourist attraction near Jersey City, which caused traffic disruptions, that authorities finally decided to give her a new home just in time for Thanksgiving.

A Better World Cafe in Highland Park

The excellent Green Jersey blog has posted on a new cafe in Highland Park. The food is from New Jersey-grown fresh produce and customers get to pick their own portion sizes so that food is not wasted, and also pick portions based on their ability to pay. Customers can even volunteer their time for a free lunch!

Strolling Through Upper Montclair

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Upper Montclair is sometimes forgotten because it is not part of the downtown Montclair business district. But Upper Montclair is like a little village all by itself. Above is the beautiful Bellevue Theatre on Bellevue Avenue.

What I like about Upper Montclair village is the way many of the shops (at least the ones near Valley Road) have a Tudor look. Not only is this pretty, invoking an English village, but because it makes all the buildings seem to work together, instead of being a jumble of different designs. I also like that not all of the shops are chain stores, but small town merchants. Old fashioned shops with a modern twist.

Here are some typical Upper Montclair streets. There are many beautiful houses and buildings here with many trees.

Watching the Hawks in Montclair, Part 1

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Watch the hawk making lazy circles in the sky!

With the words to the song "Oklahoma" running through my head, I decided to watch the hawks at the Fall Hawk Watch in Montclair. The Hawk Watch is the second oldest one in the country. I thought it would be an interesting and different -- not to mention a free -- thing to do. My boyfriend and I went to Edgecliff Road which appeared to be almost deserted.

We simply could not find the Hawk Watch entrance and finally we saw a passing runner who showed us the way. It turned out that the entrance was not marked.

We walked through the entrance and walked into the woods.

We then came to the steps to lead to the Hawk Watch. These steps are not for the out-of-shape or for those afraid of heights. The first set of steps have no handrails.

We then walked up a second set of steps -- this time with handrails -- and saw the first Hawk Watch sign, which was somewhat obscured by a fence.

We finally got to the top! The views are beautiful!

It's hard to tell from this picture, but that's New York City in the distance! I believe that middle group of buildings is Montclair State University.

Some more views:

The Hawk Watch is located on a cliff on basalt ridges of the First Watchung Mountain.

We did see one hawk, but it was not a good day for hawk-watching. We were told that the wind was going in the wrong direction.

Very disappointing, so I vowed to come back another day, when the winds were blowing in the right direction and the scenery was more colorful.

We then proceeded to leave. I found out quickly that going down was much more scary then going up, because you're actually seeing how steep it is.

We'll be back!

Theeeee Yankees Winnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Here is a wonderful video tribute to the 2009 World Champion New York Yankees! This video was posted on YouTube by GuardofLiberty.

See more at GuardofLiberty's
YouTube Channel page.

What's wonderful is that the BEST team in baseball won the World Series! The Yankees had by far the most depth of any team this year. It is a pleasure to root for them, not just because they win, but because they never give up and play with great heart and soul!

Please Vote Today!

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
Gov. Jon Corzine, Democrat
Chris Christie, Republican
Christopher Daggett, Independent

It is very important to vote today for the man you want to be the Governor of New Jersey, no matter what side of the political fence that you're on! Our state needs our citizens to be pro-active! Don't complain about politics if you don't vote!
